Take Only Memories, Leave Only Footprints: Eco Trekking with Hallo Tekker
Mount Rinjani is known as one of the world’s best trekking destinations. Rising to 3,726 meters above sea level, this highest volcano on Lombok island offers an incredible trekking experience, with landscapes that take hikers through lush tropical forests, vast savannas, and amazing mountain ridges before reaching the beautiful Segara Anak Lake.
As more and more people hike Mount Rinjani every year, our responsibility to protect it grows too. It’s not enough to simply admire its incredible beauty; we also need to ensure that every step we take respects nature and leaves a positive impact on the environment.
What Does Mount Rinjani Mean to Local Communities?
Sasak people, the indigenous community of Lombok, believe Mount Rinjani is far more than a mountain. It is a symbol of life, a place of deep spiritual significance, and an important part of their cultural identity, passed down through generations. Mount Rinjani is the pillar of the island. It is a source of life and livelihood that they believe must be protected and cared for so it can continue to support both the community and future generations.
Why Does Eco Trekking Matter?
Mount Rinjani provides a source of life for local communities. It is the source of water that people rely on for daily consumption, household needs, agricultural irrigation, livestock, and plantations. The forests within the Rinjani area help maintain the availability of water throughout the year. Therefore, preserving these forests has a significant impact on the lives of the local communities.
This is why eco trekking matters. It’s about exploring nature responsibly, minimizing the environmental impact, respecting local culture, and helping preserve Mount Rinjani, so future generations able experience the same beauty that we enjoy today.

We also support local communities by working with local guides and porters, and take part in tree-planting activities to help keep Rinjani green.
Our goal is simple: enjoy the adventure while helping preserve Mount Rinjani for future generations.
How Can Every Trekker Make a Difference?
Protecting Mount Rinjani starts with small actions. Every trekker can help by carrying their trash back down, using a reusable water bottle, staying on designated trails, and respecting local culture and wildlife. It doesn’t take much to make a difference.
