More Than a Job
Most Rinjani porters come from villages surrounding the national park, such as north side of Senaru, east side of Sembalun, and west side of Torean. They are members of the Sasak community, the indigenous people of Lombok, who have relied on Mount Rinjani for their livelihoods for generations.
Life as a Rinjani porter is far more than simply hiking up and down the mountain. Many of them live between two different rhythms. that is the rhythm of the mountain and the rhythm of village life. When they are not guiding trekkers through Rinjani’s rugged trails, they return home to their families, work in the fields, tend livestock, or take care of other daily responsibilities.
