The name Bukit Pergasingan comes from the word “Gasing”, a traditional Sasak spinning top made from wood. Gasing has been a favorite game among the Sasak people for generations and is still commonly played today, especially in Sembalun.
According to history, in the past Pergasingan Hill was a gathering place where local people held traditional Gasing competitions. Because of its strong connection to this traditional game, the hill eventually became known as Bukit Pergasingan, which literally means “the place for playing Gasing.”
Today, Bukit Pergasingan is not only known as the place where people once played Gasing. It has become one of Lombok’s most popular hiking destinations, offering a challenging trail and amazing views at the same time.

Bukit Pergasingan is located in Sembalun Lawang Village, Sembalun District, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Nestled on the eastern side of Mount Rinjani, this scenic hill stands at around 1,700 meters above sea level. Location near the Sembalun gate of Mount Rinjani National Park, it’s a favorite hiking destination for travelers who want to experience incredible mountain views without committing to a multi-day trek.
The Challenge It Offers

The hike usually takes around 2 to 3 hours to reach the summit, depending on the pace, while the descent takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Most of the trail is uphill, with several steep sections that can leave catching breath. Fortunately, the path is easy to follow, so hikers can focus on enjoying the hike instead of worrying about navigation.
During the rainy season, some parts of the trail can become slippery, so wearing proper hiking shoes is highly recommended. Although the climb is physically demanding, there are no technical climbing sections, ropes, or special equipment required.

The best approach is to hike at pace. Take short breaks when needed, drink plenty of water, and don’t rush. Many first time hikers successfully reach the summit every year, proving that determination matters more than speed.
